The People Behind Your Fav PVD Murals Are Back At It, So Get Your Phone Ready For Photos
For those of us who once coveted the signature black snap front cardigans from Agnes B (For the record, I had the Esprit knockoff) and who also own multiple copies of The Andy Warhol Diaries (and are aware that that's one of the things that inspired Andy Cohen's string of best selling diaries from the last few years), but live in the burbs nowadays and get a little too happy about things like canceled plans, here's an easy way to stay in the loop about art happening around the OS.
I mean, in your travels, if you've ever happened upon a mural on the side of a building in Providence or some other publicly displayed art in the OS and wanted to know more. As is, who exactly the artist behind it was and what it's meant to symbolize. I have many times. Then I found @avenuepvd on IG, also known as The Avenue Concept, founded in 2012 and billed as the capital city's first privately administered public art program.
Having installed or showcased more than 150 works of public art (to the tune of 1.1 million), they're all about creating a thriving (local) art ecosystem for everyone to enjoy which these days probably translates to a ton of ppl uploading photos of said art to Instagram.
Speaking of which, the murals in the parking lot at the corner of Mathewson and Washington downcity —commissioned in 2015 as part of their 2-D Art series — went on to become one of the most Instagrammed spots (right up there with the Superman building) in PVD.
Get the scoop from TAC about current and future projects, including exciting additions to their 2-D Art series — two separate large scale pieces in Downtown Providence (the east wall at 32 Custom House Street & the 3rd installment of the rotating mural on the exterior of the old Providence National Bank building on Weybosset) that Resident Mural Artist Gaia and 2-D Resident Local Artist Sam White respectively start working on beginning on August 27th. Definitely stop by and see these two immensely talented artists in action live thru the 2nd week of September, the anticipated completion date.
