Whether it’s exploring the shops on and around Thames (Question: Is salt water taffy still a thing?) or al fresco dining at one of the many restaurant patios or rooftop bars, the City By The Sea is where locals and out-of-staters alike flock in droves during the summah in Rhode Island.

But if you and your crew are looking for something a little unexpected (also low key, relaxing, and with an oceanic connection) to do in Newport this season, Airbnb’s got YOU!

First off, let me just say that if not for their site and the experiences filter, I never would have known that seaweed pressing was even a thing. Not to mention marine botanicals. (I mean, hands raised if the words marine botanicals conjure up skincare related images.)

Apparently it dates all the way back to the 17th century. And Martha Stewart’s done an online tutorial about it too, so there ya go!

Yes, Create A Marine Botanical With Seaweed is the perfect workshop and art experience to gather the crafting or ocean lovers in your group together for asap. It’s an afternoon of DIY enjoyment and diversion that you squad won’t soon forget.

Artist Mary Chatowsky leads the 2 hour, 5 star-rated class which takes place at her ocean-adjacent, historic (Back in the day, apparently it was used to house the trolley cars that ran thru the city starting in the 1890’s.) studio space on Vernon Street in Newport.

With ten years of experience making art inspired by the ocean, she is there to guide you and your besties thru a multi-step process which includes working with native seaweed and other locally sourced, organic materials.

You’ll learn how to collage seaweed, dry it into paper, and create stunning designs* with the different varieties found in and around area waters.
