10 Calming Things This Local Skincare Guru Is Doing To Take Care Of Herself During Quarantine

My friend Pam is the creator of the OctoVie Skin Brush. (Maybe you’ve seen it in the Whole Body section of your neighborhood Whole Foods? It happens to be made right here in Rhode Island too btw.) She’s also a nurse, esthetician, and lymph drainage specialist, certified in face and neck. On top of all that, she’s one of the most outgoing, social, and wellness conscious people I know.

With that in mind, I’ve been wondering how, and what, she’s been doing during the quarantine. Yesterday I checked in with Pam on Facetime and found out some of the ways she and her daughter are taking care of themselves while isolating at home.

  1. First thing I do when I wake up is make my bed. It gives me a feeling of accomplishment and sets the tone for the day.

  2. Next my daughter (who’s quarantining with me) and I will do shots of warm water with fresh lemon, great for Vitamin C and for getting the digestive system going in the morning. We use actual shot glasses that I picked up at Target a while ago. Then my daughter might have some apple cider vinegar and I take some cumin which is anti-inflammatory and my probiotics.

  3. When it comes to coffee, we are addicted to the Starbucks Blonde Sunrise Blend. I make it in a Keurig, but instead of the plastic pods, I have a reusable mesh (metal) one. You can fill it with whatever kind of coffee you like and it’s a lot less wasteful than the single-use kind.

  4. We’re still filling orders for both of my skin brushes (as of last year, OctoVie is also available in Canada), so I am still very busy during the day. When I take a break, I might look at a motivational card from Hay House (Louise Hay) or take a walk. I am a big believer in staying inspired and getting outside as much as possible right now.

  5. We have been eating super healthy. I have a rice steamer that cooks vegetables in about 5 minutes, that’s been great. Sometimes on Friday nights, we get takeout from one of our favorite restaurants nearby in Warren — either The Square Peg (their fish tacos and bam bam shrimp) or Rhody Roots which is farm to table.

  6. At night I deliberately avoid the news. We have been watching Little Fires Everywhere with Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington. It’s on Hulu and is so good! Also, The Voice on NBC because I love music and believe it can really change our moods, lift us up.

  7. I might do some reading for an hour or two. My Virtual Book Club just finished reading “Little Fires Everywhere,” and I’m in the middle of “The Secret” right now too.

  8. We switch over to herbal tea in the evening. We are really enjoying the Mint Magic from Celestial Seasonings with some organic, unfiltered raw honey which I swear by because it is so good for you, has so many benefits.

  9. Occasionally I’ll indulge in a glass of wine. I found this Portuguese wine that’s an organic blend. It’s a nice treat.

  10. Before I go to sleep, I’ll do some meditation to wind down, clear my head. Sometimes I like to listen to podcasts from Louise Hay or Wayne Dyer too.
