Secrets & Lies: How To Shop Like A Pro In July

It’s 80-85 degrees outside, but in most stores, it’s already pre-fall or fall. This week, I ran to J. Crew, only to be greeted by displays of suede flats and ribbed wool sweaters. Same story in Target. A whole row of suede and leather booties. Front and center.

Nothing new (That's how the #RetailSeasons work.), but that doesn’t make it any less disappointing. The best way to deal? Shop for skin care and makeup instead of clothes.

The other day, I took my own advice and made my first trip to the new Sephora in Garden City. Not gonna lie – The thought of going actually scared me a little bit because I have gone overboard and overspent at other Sephora locals in the past. To keep myself in line this time, however, I decided to budget myself $100 and stick to it.

Here’s what I bought and why:

1. Fake It Concealer by Benefit, $24

Benefit and I go way back. I first bought their Benetint at the Sephora on the Champs Élysées about 25 years ago. We sorta lost touch after that, but have now reconnected via this concealer. It’s pretty fantastic—a stick with a concealer center surrounded by moisturizer. Essentially, it’s the laziest way to properly conceal your dark circles. Full disclosure: I had dark circles in my 4th grade school pix. And applying under-eye concealer without moisturizer will only look cake-y and draw more attention to your dark circles.

2. GlamGlow Super Mud, $69

I keep going back to this mask again and again because it helps heal breakouts and makes your skin look just like you had a salon facial, without having to listen to spa music while someone steams and pokes at your face. These days I’m definitely all about healthier looking skin and less makeup. Full Disclosure: My sister and I were talking the other day about how more makeup has the reverse effect and can make you look tired and older than your years. ‘You should write a blog about how less is more.’ She said. Done!

PS – I did come in under my Sephora budget by 49 cents, spending a grand total of $99.51. #GoMe
