My RI Life: Season James, Designer & Owner Of Above/Below Jewelry

I've been living in RI since 2000 and I never expected to make it my home, but this state grabbed something in my heart. Living my life as a mother, designer, wife and friend is truly enjoyable in this tiny state, one can truly "do it all" here! There's constant inspiration and support for what I do, especially from other woman artists, makers and business owners. I cannot stress enough how grateful I am to be part of this community!

For the holidays this year, I'm really looking forward to visiting La Salette Shrine with my daughter now that she's finally able to stay up late enough to enjoy the beautiful light displays they have there. I will be doing ALL of my holiday shopping for friends and family locally at some of my favorite shops like Frog & Toad, NAVA, White Buffalo and this great new shop on Broadway called Asterluxe. And of course, I'll be gifting plenty of my work too.

I've been in the jewelry business for about 18 years, first as saleswoman/inventory illustrator at a shop in Princeton, NJ and then as a design assistant, junior designer, senior designer, etc. I've always loved unique jewelry and loved & collected stones and minerals, so the transition into starting my line, Above/Below was a smooth one. I've been dedicated to this collection for close to 4 years and my partnerships with shops, galleries and museums has grown to more than 20 locations where you can buy my work. I'm proud of the gradual and organic growth of my business. More than 95% of what I do is one of a kind and custom work, so I'm excited to be launching a Metal Collection in 2017 that will be designed and manufactured in our very own state!
