3 Things To Know Before You Staycation At This Happening Spot
The locals aren't going to be too thrilled with me, but today, I'm sharing some inside info about what to do this summer in Watch Hill, RI. As someone who stayed at the original Ocean House (the one that also made a quick cameo in Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom btw...blink and you will have missed it!) and ended up in hot water for posting a photo of WH's most famous resident on social media (Apologies all around!), I feel like I'm totally qualified to give you a virtual tour of some of the best spots in town.
1. 'Tis The Season
For lobster rolls! If you consider yourself a connoisseur, you need to visit The Bay Street Deli. From talk show hosts to internationally acclaimed directors and action movie stars (Sworn to secrecy, but the owner does have the photos on the walls to prove it.) to folks like us, so many wait all year for this deli to reopen, just so they can get their hands on the top shelf lobster rolls. They're loaded not with tons of mayo (We've all sampled those, one too many times.) but with tons of FRESH lobster. Try for yourself and see.
2. Inn Style
You're probably already pretty familiar with the Ocean House, but how about the Watch Hill Inn? It's equally deserving of our adoration. With views of the harbor and boats, you feel as though you're actually staying onboard a yacht or something. You're also centrally located in town, an oh-so-short walk from perennial favs such as the Bay Street Deli (See above.), The Flying Horse Carousel (The last of the 'flying horse' carousels in the entire USA, brought to WH back around 1883, and added to the National Historic Register.), and Rochelle's (In case you need a Free People fix while you're in WH.). The interior, including the Sandy Point Suite where we stayed last summer, has been completely updated - hardwoods, flat screen tvs, and clean, modern decor that's upbeat and cheery.
3. Famous AF
The odds of running into you-know-who (Come on, you know!) are slim, but she's not the only celeb who has frequented WH over the last few years. Some other star sightings in the area include: Graydon Carter (editor-in-chief of Vanity Fair), Bobby De Niro and his wife, Noah Wylie (of ER fame), talk show host Conan O'Brien, and 80's rocker/MTV superstar Billy Idol (Wonder if he did any rebel yelling?). So make sure that beneath your sunnies, you are keeping your eyes peeled.
