From Reality To Runway, Red Carpet And TV

Her designs have been spotlighted on The Mindy Project, Oprah, and The Nanny (WE heard there's reboot with Fran in the not too distant coming to CBS too!) as well as in a long list of hit movies and in stores you're probably well acquainted with (and quite possibly obsessed with), including Saks and Nordie's. Since relocating back to Rhode Island from NYC, this RISD alum has kicked off a new line of knitwear - aptly named, Elana Carello - and a reality to runway style curriculum for aspiring young designers called Project FashionWorks. Last year, we featured a few of the outstanding students from her teen classes, and starting this month, we're checking back in with Elana for deets and highlights from her tween tutorial.

Behind The Seams With Elana

A few years after I started my teen classes on fashion design, some of the moms started asking about holding a class for their younger siblings. So I put together a week-long summer class for young designers 8-12. It has turned out to be a popular class, and usually fills up very quickly.

In this class, students:

  • make their own Red Carpet and Runway fashions using our original paper dolls
  • create their own fashion magazine
  • design and execute an outfit for a Barbie doll
  • design and model a Newspaper dress for a musical Fashion Runway Show.

Those are just a few of the many projects we complete - we’re busy!

Friends and family are invited to view the Fashion Show on the last day, as well, and it’s always a wonderful highlight of the class.

Photo Diary

In the coming weeks, we'll be featuring an aspiring designer from Elana's FashionWorks classes for tweens (and teens!) and shining a light on these Rhody designers who could be the next Superstars of the fashion scene. In the meantime, here's a photo diary of some of the projects at Elana's 'Style School'.
