There's A New 3D Mural In Downtown Providence And Wow

FullSizeRender.jpg

A few weeks ago I was fortunate enough to go on a guided walking tour of Downtown Providence with someone from The Avenue Concept, the non-profit founded by a RISD grad around 7 years ago that’s brought so much marvelous public art to the capital city.

Fran from TAC spotlighted 12 murals and sculptures that the organization has commissioned since their inception, including the now Instagram famous ones situated on opposite walls at 134 Mathewson “She Never Came” by Bezt and “Adventure Time” by Natalina Rak. (Search on IG and you’ll probably come across hundreds of captures of those two alone.)

The brand new 3D mural by Amy Bartlett Wright (you may remember her as the artist who created the “Crane Flight” wall mural on the side of Crosstown Press building in Cranston near the City Hall, that I first posted about last September) on the brick facade at 35 Weybosset (in another life it used to be the Providence National Bank Building) was NOT up at that point.

After following its progress online, we motored over last night to see the completed work and it is really something!

Entitled “We Are One Flock,” it is a commingling of hand painted imagery and birds that have been sculpted and then painted, Long Tailed Parakeets and Great Blue Herons that appear to be taking flight right before your eyes!

And I understand that it “changes” depending on the time of day, how much or how little light is hitting it, etc..

To view this stunning work for yourself, you’ll want to take a spin over to Weybosset Street in the Providence Financial District soon.

PS ~ There’s also a gorgeous mural by Boston artist Sagie Vangelina on the other side of that facade.
