There's A New Italian Restaurant Opening In Bristol And It Sounds Amazing
You’ll Want To Plant Yourself At 31 State Street
I was raised on Italian food, what with my mom being 100% Italian American — and her sister and her momma (my aunt Betty and my grandmother) living above us on the 2nd floor of a the 3 story tenement in Providence that we called home.
My aunt and my grandmother would roll out the big wooden board that they used to cover the formica kitchen tabletop, cover it with a thin layer of flour, and go to town rolling cavatelli (shaped) pasta with their fingers. (The pasta would then be dried for a day or so in a cold room in their apartment before being cooked up for visiting relatives or special company from out of town.)
There were also homemade meatballs, fried zucchini flowers, cakes, pizzelles (one of my brothers was tres upset when our local neighborhood Whole Foods at one point stopped carrying boxed pizzelle cookies, that’s all I will say), wandies, and much more.
Anywho, I still live for a scrumptious Italian meal and never turn down a plate of pasta, but for the last ten years or so (give or take), I’ve stopped eating meat which can make it pretty challenging to order at most Italian restaurants around these parts.
I mean, my meals are usually centered around tomato salads, eggplant, meat-less pizza, or macaroni. (For the record, no one in my mom’s family ever used the word PASTA, but I digress.)
So, when I found out that Foglia, a stylish sit-down restaurant specializing in plant based Italian food as well as creative cocktails and mocktails, would be opening their doors this summer, I was intrigued.
Could it be that we RI’ers would finally be getting somewhere akin to West Hollywood’s much-talked-and-written-about Pura Vita?
It sure sounds that way !!!
Their menu is going to include classics like pizza, antipasto (with meatless versions of pepperoni and such), pasta dishes (the eggs used in a traditional dough obviously disqualify it for vegan status), and a whole lot more.
I know they’ve had a few pre-opening private dinners, but they are not open just yet.
Counting the days over here, lol.
That being said, you will want to bookmark this fab new spot for when reservations do become available.
Chef Peter Carvelli, prior to helming Foglia, has been quietly winning over locals and tourists alike with his take on stuffed peppers, brushetta, ravioli, and (crab-less) “crab cakes” at pop-ups at eateries like Root On Broadway (over in Newport).
All plant-based (foglia translated means leaf btw) and all big dinner crowd pleasers.
Foglia is located at 31 State Street in Bristol, Rhode Island.
