The Igloos At This NPT Resort Are Perf For Your Next Night Out Photo Op
Heated igloos aren’t exactly new. The trend that has restaurants, bars, and hotels setting them up on their patios and rooftops has been around since 2017 or so. And has grown exponentially from there.
These days, you can find them pretty much everywhere from New York (The people at Fifth Rooftop Bar were early adopters.) to Connecticut, DC, Detriot, Milwaukee, Atlanta and all points in between and beyond.
They are, however, still new-ish to Rhode Island.
The great news is that this winter Gurney’s Newport has ‘em! Now, not trying to be impartail here in the least because frankly, I loooooove Gurney’s. I’ve had many a delicious meal at Scarpetta, the Italian restaurant on the premises. Also, since opening, they’ve hosted two of my favorite former-Conde-Nast-editors-turned-21-century-lifestyle-gurus Jean Godfrey June (now of Gwyneth Paltrow’s GOOP) and Eva Chen (now of Instagram). And similar to the set-up Doris Duke had a Rough Point back in the day, I hear thru the grapevine that they have salt water on tap at their spa.
My great friend S. and were there yesterday late afternoon for hot chcolate after touring the Mansions (another thing to add to your Holiday 2019 bucket list) and it was a blast.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not someone who would ever want to sleep outside in a tent or anything (glamping maybe, traditional camping NEVER), but heated igloos overlooking the Bay and the NPT Pell Bridge at one of the chic-est resorts around, absolutely! Sign. Me. Up.
There are six domes in all to choose from. Each one has a different theme (ours was tropical with lotsa faux greenery, battery operated candles, and a neat fringe thing hanging from the “ceiling”), a heater (still a little chilly, though, so you’ll want to bust out that cashmere), and some kind of view of the iconic bridge.
They also offer the menu from the adjacent Pineapple Club bar which includes a nice selection of sandwiches, salads, snacks, beers, wines, coffee, and (my go-to lately) hot chocolate.
And don’t even get me started about all the pretty lights strung everywhere!
In addition, and this is extremely important, you do have to make reservations in advance. I mean, this is literally one of the hottest things to do in the city by the sea this winter (all of Rhode Island, really).
And did some say INSTAGRAM? Yesss, as the kids are wont to say, this is a highly ‘Grammable experience. Fact: My camera roll has at least two dozen photos (probably more) from yesterday.
