You Can Have These RI Goats Do Your Landscaping & Where Do We Sign Up?

There’s GOAT, as in Greatest Of All Time (Remember all those Tom Brady memes floating around online before, during, and after this year’s Super Bowl?) and then there are actual goats.

Or for the purposes of this post, there are those 🐐 that are part of what’s known as the Herd of Hope at Laurel Hill Micro Farm in Hope, Rhode Island.

A farm sanctuary  run by Wayne Pitman and Jackie Magnan, Laurel Hill has become known for producing edible flowers (Speaking of which, if you still haven’t had a cocktail with edible flowers from Little Bitte Cocktails, you are missing out big time.), greens and herbs, and even soap made from goat’s milk.

But wait, it’s actually the GOATSCAPING services that have put them on the proverbial map locally. 

Think landscaping - or yard work - done by goats.

Yes, goats are the key to what’s come to be called sustainable land management.

They can clear large areas of over-growth, poison ivy (or sumac, or oak...It’s an irritant to us and a delicacy to them. How do ya like THAT!) and weeds no problem. (It hasn’t been covered on GOOP.com yet, but give it time. It’s pretty much an update on Farm House Chic craze, only having to do with groundskeeping.) The goats are also able to access harder to reach terrain that might present a problem for us humans. (Translation - Why risk it?) In addition, any waste the goats produce works as a fertilizer for the land. I mean, what’s not to love?

Plus, the goats are beyond ADORABLE.

And I found out about them in true Rhode Island fashion: my sister’s sister-in-law has been hiring the Herds of Hope for the last I-don’t-know how many years to help manage a plot of land adjacent to her house.
